The mom who reportedly left her two young children, under the age of 12, home alone for two days and nights so she can go on a vacation with her boyfriend has been arrested. Authorities said the children survived off of candy, snacks and Uber Eats deliveries. One of the children reportedly said that they had been told by their mom to stay in the basement and not go upstairs.
The mother and teacher from Connecticut, Kerry Lyn Caviasca, reportedly left her two children, both under the age of 12, home alone from the weekend of Nov. 20 to Nov. 22 while she went to Florida with her boyfriend. Prosecutors said the children survived off of candy, snacks and Uber Eats deliveries, according to reports.
Her ex-husband reportedly went to the police station in December to report that his wife may have left the kids home alone. He told investigators that the students missed school on Monday, Nov. 22, and that he had been unable to contact them over that weekend. Caviasca has primary custody of the children, court records say.
Her ex-husband also told authorities that when he asked the children whether they had been left home alone, they told him no, but he didn’t believe them. The man then went through the messages of a cell phone he had provided for one of the kids, which revealed several texts between the children and their mother from the weekend.
According to reports, one of the text messages reportedly showed one of the children asking their mother what they were supposed to eat for dinner that night.
Their mother reportedly replied: “Just eat candy. What ever is downstairs, there’s so much downstairs. I’ll make it up to you.”
In another text message, the mother reportedly asked one of the children to delete the messaging app from the phone. She then followed up asking if all of the old messages were gone after the app was reinstalled.
In December, officers responded to Caviasca’s home and asked her if she had left the children alone in November. The woman reportedly said that she had been in Florida with her boyfriend, but the children had been left in the care of her brother. But, she later admitted that they had been left home alone.
During an interview with investigators, one of the children reportedly said that they had been told by their mom to stay in the basement and not go upstairs. The other kid reportedly told investigators that they had been left with snacks in the basement and that the UberEats app was used several times to order food.
Kerry Lyn Caviasca was taken into custody on Jan. 15. She is now charged with two counts of risk of injury to a minor and two counts of reckless endangerment in the second degree.
This incident remains under investigation. This is a developing story and it will be updated as new information become available.
