The babysitter reportedly got frustrated with the child after it would not stop crying.
The 21-year-old woman from Texas, Berta Evelin Lopez-Vasquez, is now charged with serious bodily injury to a child.
The baby’s mother, Fidelina Velasquez, said she left her 5-month-old baby, Adrian, and her 2-year-old son with the 21-year-old woman on Jan.19 while she and her husband went to work. The babysitter was reportedly referred to the family by a friend. The mother said this was the second time she used the 21-year-old as a babysitter.
According to reports, the babysitter reportedly told investigators that she tossed the boy in the air several times to get it to stop crying. She also said that he dropped the child on her bedroom floor and failed to render aid once the baby started seizing and stopped breathing for about one minute.
The babysitter then refused to take the baby to the hospital as she was not its mother. The woman called the child’s parents and said they needed to pick the child up because it was not breathing. The parents took the child to the hospital. Doctors reportedly found fractures on the back of the child’s skull and brain damage.
Doctors also discovered that the baby’s injuries were not accidental and were caused by severe blunt force trauma. Investigators with the Texas Department of Family Protective Services reportedly discovered that the 21-year-old babysitter got frustrated with the child after it would not stop crying.
The babysitter reportedly started shaking the child vigorously and threw the child with force into a wall about six to seven feet away. After the baby fell to the ground, it started seizing and momentarily stopped breathing.
The baby’s mother said her is in critical but stable condition and long-term effects from this incident have not been determined. A GoFundMe page has been created to help with the family’s expenses.
The 21-year-old woman is being held on $200,000 bond. This incident remains under investigation. This is a developing story and it will be updated as new information become available.
